ConfigPPP Control Panel
1. Go to the Control Panels section under the Apple menu, and select Config PPP. You will see a panel with PPP DOWN in the upper left corner with a couple of sad faces.
  • Port Name: select the port that your modem is attached to. Usually this will be the modem port, but you may have an internal modem in which case you should choose Internal modem instead.
  • Idle Timeout (minutes): select None. Dandy has an idle timeout built into the system so you do not need to set one of your own.
  • Echo Interval (seconds): select 10.
  • The Terminal Window box should NOT be checked.
  • The Hang up on Close box should be checked.
  • The Quiet Mode box should not be checked, for now. Once the setup is working, then you can choose quiet mode if you wish, but for now it is easier to troubleshoot if you can hear what is going on.
  • The Disable Auto Connect box should not be checked.

2. Click the Config... button.

  • You will now see a dialog box with PPP Server Name: at the top. Type Dandy or anything else you wish to call your PPP connection with us.
  • Your port speed depends on what speed modem you have. Here are the correct settings:
    Modem
    Port Speed
    14400
    38400
    28800
    57600
    33600
    57600

* NOTE: Do NOT select 14400 if you have a 14.4 modem, or 28800 if you have a 28.8 modem -- the port speed you set here should be higher than your modem speed.

  • Flow Control: select CTS only or CTS & RTS (DTR). If you're not sure which of these to use, select CTS & RTS (DTR).
  • Select either tone dial or pulse dial, depending on what your phone line supports.
  • Enter our phone number (include the area code if you need to - but do NOT enter a 1 before the number!)
  • The Modem Init field is a little more difficult. Different modems need different init strings, and, unfortunately, we can't tell you which one to use. Usually you will want to have the init string set the modem back to factory defaults. For most modems, the string AT&F will do this. On some modems, it may be AT&F0 or AT&F1. You will also need to make sure that hardware handshaking is turned on. You may need to refer to your modem manual, or call the modem manufacturer and ask for the proper init string.
  • The Modem connect timeout should be set to 90 seconds.
  • Ignore Scripting -- we don't use it, and when you configure Authentication, ConfigPPP will ignore any entries in Scripting anyway...

3. Click the Authentication button. Here we will enter your username and password.
AuthID: Dandy username (all lower case, do not include the @dandy.net)
Password: Dandy password (case sensitive)

4. Click the OK button.

5. Click the Done button. This should put you back in the ConfigPPP window.

6. Close ConfigPPP.

7. Now Restart the Mac and we'll try out the software! At this point, if you haven't configured your TCP software, you will want to do so. In your control panel, you should have either MacTCP or TCP/IP.
