FreePPP Control Panel

1. First thing you want is to have FreePPP installed on your Mac. Follow the instructions in your book or simply run the download file to install FreePPP . After doing this, you'll want to go into the Apple Menu and then into Control Panel and select FreePPP.

* NOTE: Once this is open, if you only have a window that has the Connect button, Connect to: , and From: , then you need to click on the little triangle that is in the lower left hand corner of the screen, that is pointing towards the From: line. If this is already expanded, the arrow should be pointing down and you will have some tabs in the lower half of the window.

2. From the General tab: The following should be selected:

  • Allow applications to open connection
  • Check line every X seconds
  • Allow alerts during connection

You do not what the following selected:

  • Disconnect if idle for X minutes
  • On connect, open FreePPP setup application
  • Open application on connect...(optional, but not recommended)

This is what it should look like:

 

Now click, Modem Setup. This screen has FreePPP Modem Setup at the top.
These are the settings you want:

  • Connected to the: Modem Port
  • Dial Type: Tone or Pulse
  • Modem Speaker on while connecting (if you want)
  • (not marked) Long re-dial delay
  • Hang up on disconnect

Under Modem Init String Settings:

  • Use: (leave this blank)

It should look like this:

 

Click OK. You should be back to the General tab now. Click on Accounts .

You'll then see a screen like this:

 

Select New...

You'll then see a screen that looks like this:
Only with blank fields.

 

The information you want typed in is:

  • Server name: Dandy
  • Phone Number
  • (if you have call waiting, before the phone number enter *70, or 70#)
  • You don't want "Dial as long distance" or "Dial area code" marked
  • Connect: Directly
  • User name: your username
  • Password: your password

Now, click on Connection.

  • Port Speed: Depends on what speed modem you have. Here are the correct settings:
    Modem
    Port Speed
    14400
    38400
    28800
    57600
    33600
    57600
  • Flow Control: CTS & RTS (DTR)
  • Modem Init String: AT&F or AT&F1

This is what it should look like:

 

Now click on the Options tab. You do not need to enter anything here.

It should look like this:

 

Click OK.

Close the FreePPP Control Panel.

At this point you will need to configure your TCP program. You may have either TCP/IP or MacTCP.
